Loose Krew

This is a brand that Nick Lee and I hope to launch. Right now, we are in the process of creating designs. The designs that we have so far are T-shirts and tanktops, but we hope to expand to possibly sweatshirts, snapbacks, etc. We will have to start with Nick and I wearing the brand, and also some friends, just to promote it; And when more and more people start wanting the shirts, we will have them posted online for a price.

We don’t have our website up and running yet, but we hope to have it working soon. We also have a Facebook page running so that we can get as much exposure as possible. We will be posting our designs there as well as on our website. That way, people can give feedback on which designs are their favorites.

The goal of Loose Krew is to get people active and to get people heard. We want people to be interested in being outside and being active. We also want those kids that don’t get heard to be able to express themselves. These shirts will be a way of saying, “This is me, so deal with it.” Skateboarding and snowboarding are both extreme sports and we hope that this brand will appeal to those people who participate in them, but will also get people more interested in those sports.

Some challenges that we are going to face will definitely deal with audience. Getting our products produced and out into the world is going to take time and effort. It is going to take a lot of work to get a decent sized fan base. The main way to achieve that goal is to make products that mean something to those people, and that is our plan. We want to produce clothing that people will WANT to wear and be proud to wear it. It doesn’t matter if you have some “loose screws”, it’s who you are and it’ll stay that way!

Adobe Illustrator is our main source for designing our products.

Our original question was, “Who will this appeal to?” We wondered what type of audience would be intrigued by our products. We want Loose Krew to appeal to people who want to be heard, people who want to be noticed.

Edge of Art; Autobotography

1-What are some of the reasons for a surge in digital autobiographical production from “home pages” to “wearcams”?

One reason for the surge in digital autobiographical production was because we finally had the power of having the camera in our own hands. Not only that, but we had the whole process of publishing it, too. People finally had the power to do what they wanted with a camera and having the ability to publish it through a publishing medium. These productions surged because people had a hunger for content when other people tell their own stories. The fact that they could watch someone’s life, such as Jennicam, was something so new and uncommon.

2-What is the role of autobotography vis-a-vis technology’s “narcotic effect”?

It shows that we depend on technology in almost everything we do.

3-Jennicam gives us an example of the pleasures of self-disclosure, Mann’s WearCams give an example of the dangers of surveillance. Are there dangers in Jennifer Ringley’s work (or similar projects)? And what might those dangers be? Conversely, are there any pleasures in Stephen Mann’s WearCams?

People could see everything that Jennifer Ringley was doing. There are definitely dangers in that. What if she had a stalker? In today’s society, that could be very likely. He could have known exactly when she was the only one home or something like that. Stephen Mann’s WearCams definitely have pleasures. The fact that you are recording people that don’t know they’re under surveillance gives you a sense of superiority. When you are controlling the camera, you feel that you are the one with more power.

4-Explain how 2 of the blogging projects reshapes our sense of self, life, or writing.

Blogging a Birth: This project definitely reshapes our sense of life. To have a live viewing of the miracle of life is remarkable, and it is only possible now with the technology we have. If the person was just writing about this, it wouldn’t be anywhere close to the same.

5-Pick one of the “moving self-portraits” and explain how the project evokes the mystery of our contemporary lives. What kinds of issues does the portrait raise?

NobodyHere was one of the more interesting pieces. It starts with the silhouette of a man just sitting at his computer typing. You are able to scroll of words, and as you do, he types something about those words. I put my mouse over the word “choices” and he typed, “Choices don’t matter that much.” All of these sentences are personal opinions that this character is trying to convey to us. There is such an ease at passing information now without actual face-to-face interaction. Sooner or later, I feel like we are going to lose all sense of human interaction and it is all going to be through electronics.

6-Katherine Hayles speaks of the “post-human” in describing the cyborgian entities we have become. How do the artists of this chapter create autobotographies of this “post-human” cyborg? Consider, for example Life Sharing and [phage].

Now that kids and pretty much everyone else is on Facebook or Twitter, or some other social networking site, there are cyber versions of all of us. We each have our own online identity. We spend so much of our lives shaping these online selves when we could be shaping our physical selves. People have become so intertwined with their cyber identities that sometimes I don’t think they know that it’s not all real.

7-How do digital artists examine the commodification of the self? How has the self become another consumer good, or how does a human being get reduced to a “consumer”? Which digital projects raise theese questions and how do they do it?

8-Describe the autobotography of “invented selves” or avatars. How do Female Extension and Darko Maver raise questions about the nature of digital selves. Why do they use invented selves and what are the reasons for doing so and the effects of their choices?

I feel as though people try so hard to create an invented self that is perfect. They don’t want people to see their flaws, so they create some digital self that isn’t even close to who they really are. Invented selves can be whoever you want them to be, which is why people create this fake self.

Deep Play; Gender

I can only think of a handful of games where there is a female as the main character. Almost all games of the past 50 years have been male main characters. It has happened so much that it almost seems natural. I believe that games geared towards adolescent boys have strong gender stereotypes because that is when these boys are maturing and going through puberty. These stereotypes make them feel more empowered, for example, the main character being male; Or in such games as Grand Theft Auto, you have the power to beat up prostitutes. These games keep the user intrigued and makes them want to keep playing.

A game that challenges stereotypes for women would be Tomb Raider. Lara Croft, the main character, is a strong woman that the user plays through the game with. At the same time, they made her an unrealistic sex symbol for boys and men. The designers gave her enormous breasts and a tiny waist.

“In its raw form, gender can be arresting, as the hit counts of porn sites readily attest. In the context of gaming, however, gender more often serves as a character embellishment meant to drive rather than halt the story. Yet without moments of arrest, games that invoke or rely on gender as a plot device usually fail to transcend stereotypical roles for male or female characters.”

Companies continue to re-inscribe gender roles towards adolescent boys, especially gender roles where women are nothing more than a sex symbol, because they know that boys will feed off of that. Games such as GTA allow for these stereotypes to step in with abilities such as beating up prostitutes.

The Rosetta Project

http://rosettaproject.org/

This project is amazing and has such an important meaning. Language is one of foundations of the human species. Each time we lose a language, we lose a little more cultural diversity. A whole history of different people is lost when we lose a language. The prototype for this project is incredible. A three inch nickel disk has 14,000 pages of information etched onto its surface. Digital obsolescence is a major problem and this project focuses on a new way of archival storage. It is important to preserve these thousands of languages. Each one tells a very different story.

10,000 Year Clock

http://longnow.org/clock/

This is an awesome project. This clock will play a different melody for 10,00 years! It raises a lot of questions in the aspect of long-term thinking. One really interesting question that this project raised was, “If the Clock keeps going after we are personally long dead, why not attempt other projects that require future generations to finish?” That is a really interesting concept and I believe that question will be seriously considered and there will soon be some sort of project that requires multiple generations to finish.

Trek’n’Check

This is a simple home screen for the application that Nick and I created. We wanted to give the user some different options to start with. We gave the option to check in, look at points of interest, find people, and discover new areas. This application has potential to be a good, but the only problem we have would be getting the wifi connection to remote areas where people would actually be hiking and using the application.

Inspectacles

We would make a pair of glasses that would project a computer screen. The user would use a controller and/or keyboard for interaction with the screen. The hard drive could be contained in the mouse and keyboard, and they would wirelessly transmit the image to the glasses.

This was sort of a far-fetched, future type of project idea. We were just trying to put our brains to work and think of something spectacular, but at the same time, it is a good idea.

Keychain Breathalyzer

Place a breathalyzer on every keychain of a push-to-start vehicle. This would make it so that the driver could breathe into the breathalyzer, and if their blood-alcohol content is too high, then the car won’t start.

I feel that this could be a really important thing in the future. To be able to start someone’s car based on the blood-alcohol content would be life-saving, literally.

Trek’n’Check

Trek’n’Check is an application for any mobile device which would allow users to periodically check in at designated points during hikes or nature walks. This app would use a point system similar to Foursquare, where the user would get points for reaching certain parts of the mountain or trail. There would also be an award system if the user reached significant points, such as the peak of a mountain.

They Rule

Theyrule.net is such an interesting website. It shows us all of the people that have a part in big corporations and companies. It shows every director and how they are connected to different companies. It is also very interesting how people connected to more than one company become a little fatter. All of these people affect our lives. They make decisions that come into play in our lives. It is weird to think about that, but it is true. These people are affecting us in one way or another.

The Yes Men

This was by far one of the most courageous things that I have seen. I still cannot believe that one of the Yes Men went on live television as a representative for DOW. Also, the fact that he completely spoke for them and said things that a normal DOW representative wouldn’t have said, like the offer he made. “After 20 years, we are finally taking responsibility for what happened.” These two men had very good intentions while pulling these stunts. They were trying to make people realize right from wrong. They were trying to make DOW chemical take responsibility for what they did years ago. It was a pretty amazing stunt that they pulled and I don’t know if anyone will top that.

Every Icon; John Simon

This is one of the more interesting projects. To think that it will eventually create every icon that is possible in a 32 by 32 grid is unbelievable. And also, that it will take 10298 years to complete. This goes to show that not every project is simply just done and completed by the artist, sometimes it takes time to complete or make. The only question I have for this project is that, is anyone going to be around to see it finish?

Behind The Wall

My idea for this project is to create a typography self portrait that will show what people say to me in person compared to what people say to me on the Internet. It seems like a lot more is said through a computer than what is usually said in person. I want this to show the differences in quality and quantity of how people interact with me in those two different ways. Each half of the portrait may look drastically different based on what people have said to me. Why does the Internet make us say things that we wouldn’t say in person? Why does it make us act like who we aren’t?

Edge of Art; Designing Politics

1. Describe the difference between Political Design and Hacktivist Art. Use an example of each and describe how that work fits the category of design or art.

The main difference between designing politics and hacktivist art is that politics tries to change the world directly, and with the use of force. Hacktivist art is done by hackers that have a cause and they attempt to question the problem, usually with humor. Politics goal is to bring major dilemmas to attention and try to fix them. Art makes people aware of the situation and tries to question it to fix it. One example of hacktivist art would be the process of website mirroring. Hacktivists take a censored website and post it to a domain that is uncensored.

2. What does execution mean? How does it relate to computers (ie .exe files). What are some example of executatb;e art? How is execution different from representation? In other words how does each realte to the media paradigms of one-to-many vs many-to-many?

To execute something, means to carry it out or to accomplish something. Execution is the act of accomplishing something. With computers, .exe files are executable files, meaning that something will be carried out if it is clicked. Representation is just the act of presenting something. It is seen by people rather than something that is executed. Representation would fall into the category of one-to-many while execution would be many-to-many.

3. Why do you think Hacktivist artists find themselves hacking capitalist and political structures that most other people revere? What problem or dangers do they see in these forms of power? Use sample projects to answer this question.

I believe that hacktivist artists choose to hack capital and political structures because they want to do things that normal people wouldn’t dare to do. They want to prove that they are capable of doing things that leaders of the country wouldn’t expect. The hacktivist group Anonymous recently hacked into the websites for the Department of Justice and FBI. They did this because of the government shutting down Megaupload.com. They want to prove that they have power, too. And also that they won’t go down without a fight.

4.How do hacktivists confirm McLuhan’s prediction that the ‘nation-state’ wold not survive the advent of electronic media? Do hacktivists challenge or question any critical policies of nation-states? Does their practice suggest any alternatives to the nation-state? Or why are they not really concerned about anarchy?

As it Happened – A Secret History of Hacking

This was one of the more interesting videos that I have watched in a class. The whole story behind it was awesome. It is amazing how certain technology and things like that start. “Very important advances came from hackers.” The reason that hackers became so important was because they didn’t what their computers did, they just wanted to have fun and play around with it. That is the most important part of learning I believe, if you can have fun and just want to play around with it, there are countless things that you can learn. “Hackers have a different way of viewing things than most people. They are able to make connections that other people can’t.” It was amazing how long Mitnick was able to evade the law. Hackers just wanted to know all that they could. Elders don’t want the young people to know what they know because they don’t want them to become too powerful.

Response to Occupy Movement

First of all, I have never been very interested in politics. It is important, though, that I know what is going on with this movement. This article was the first time I actually found out how the whole Occupy Movement started. I found it interesting that it was fueled by a challenge from a magazine. The magazine told them to “bring a tent.” A few thousand people showed up and camped at Zuccotti Park, which started the global movement. This movement isn’t like other movements; there is no set demand and leadership is broadly shared. What they want is a world that works for the 99%. They want the system to be fixed so that the rich don’t keep getting richer while there are people struggling day in and day out.

What is New Media? Vin Crosbie

What is New Media?

It seems to me that Vin Crosbie is a little angry about the way that people have been using the terms “media” and “medium.” He states clearly a couple of times that Internet, radio, TV, magazines, telephones, etc., are not media. They “are vehicles for conveying information within a medium or media.” This quote helped me a little more to understand what he meant. Also, the way that he explained it in terms of transportation really helped with his concept. It is important that we, as new media students, understand what he is trying to tell us before we can further our studies.

1-What are the three transportation media? What is the difference between a transport medium and a transport vehicle?

The three transportation media are land, water, and air. A transport vehicle would be something that we use to utilize the transport medium. So, water would be the transport medium while a boat would be the transport vehicle. There are many different vehicles, but only 3 transportation media.

2-What are the three communication media? Give examples of communication media vs communication vehicles. Email uses which communication medium?

The three communication media are the Interpersonal Medium, the Mass Medium, and the New Medium. An email would be a form of Interpersonal Media.

3-What are the advantages/disadvantages of interpersonal communication? of broadcast communication?

The advantages of interpersonal communication are that each participant has an equal control over the content that is conveyed. Also, That content can be individualized based on the needs and interest of each participant. The disadvantage is that if there are more people, there is less control among each participant. The advantages of broadcast communication is that the same content goes to all of the participants. Only one person has control over the content that is conveyed. The disadvantage is that the content can’t be customized to individual participants.

4-What are the characteristics of the New Medium? Is a many-to-many communication possible without the new technology of laptop, iphone and internet?

The characteristics of the New Medium are individualized information can be delivered to any amount of people. This information can be individualized based on the participant. The participant, publisher, broadcaster, etc., all have control over what information is conveyed. This New Medium isn’t a natural communication system for humans. Without technology, I don’t believe that it is possible to get a many-to-many form of communication out there.

Response to Eli Pariser

The World Needs You to See it With Fresh Eyes

This was a pretty refreshing read. I enjoyed hearing that anyone is possible of changing the world and making a difference. He told his story of how he made a difference, and also the story of Marla Ruzicka, which was also a great one. I thought it was important that he emphasized that you didn’t have to be a martyr like Marla, but you just have to stand up for something. Like Eli said, when the car is headed for a cliff and the driver’s seat is empty, who is going to take the wheel? In the big picture, we each possess the power to change everything. Everyone is fallible. Everyone is imperfect. Anyone can make a difference.
